Highlighting the elements of true heroism, director Joe Johnston hits just the right tone with this update of an original American icon. Chris Evans rises above an unremarkable script to deliver his first truly believable performance as Steve Rogers, a 90-pound weakling whose persistence and character land him in a secret government program designed to create super soldiers.
Cleverly dovetailing Cap's war propaganda roots into acts of real courage, the film is solid and entertaining, if a bit long. The film was shot in 2D but with the intent of converting it later, and this planning really shines in 3D. There is a great sense of depth and subtlety to the process, with a few crowd-pleasing embellishments.
Hugo Weaving projects the requisite brute force of the Red Skull, leading a faction of Nazi soldiers with a mystical energy source. Tommy Lee Jones looks even more tired than usual as a wary military commander, and Haley Atwell has a promising start to her film career as officer Carter.
Continuing the mighty Marvel tradition of crossovers, look for a link to Iron Man's past and Thor's future, plus stay after the end credits for a glimpse at what's to come for this First Avenger. This star-spangled tale is...

Pride in America should never be devalued, so if you ever come across someone who uses the term "jingoism" to describe it, just know the word actually means "patriotism that person finds offensive," which is almost any display of patriotism other than complaints against this country.
